Watoto

During my travels and work with women, I’ve seen suffering and have heard some incredibly moving stories. However, Ugandan charity, Watoto has been a life-changing experience for me.

In 2007 I came across a group of truly inspiring women who have endured hardships most of us can’t even imagine. Watoto is a charity that has been operating in Uganda for over 25 years. When I saw the plight of these incredible women, I knew I had to do something to help, something that would make a difference. So I decided to use my two businesses to give me the freedom to support this amazing charity. In March 2009 I had the privilege of visiting Watoto which inspired me to take action.

The women helped by Watoto were abducted at a young age, raped, and violated. Many have been mutilated. As the civil war in Uganda ended the women were abandoned and left with babies and children of their own. Many of the women and children are infected with HIV. Their needs are huge and the possibilities to help are endless.

Inspired by the work of Thistle Farms in Nashville, Tennessee the long-term vision is to produce hand-made beauty products using locally grown Shea nut and lavender. Shea nuts have been grown in northern Uganda for years and research is currently under way to plant and harvest lavender.

The most pressing need however, is for a nursery for the babies and children. This will allow the women the freedom to learn new skills and put them to work.

With the help of Big Yellow Storage I am currently collecting toys and baby equipment. All I need now is the transport to get it to Gulu. So if you know anyone who has an airplane - please let me know!

And if you would like to make a donation, or get involved in any way, please get in contact with me directly.
